HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Many animals are frightened by the commotion that happens at an average house on Halloween night. The Minnesota Valley Humane Society in Burnsville recommends:

  • It's best to keep your pets away from the front door during Trick or Treating hours. It's so easy for them to get frightened by the activity and dart out the door. Be sure he's wearing a collar and updated tags just in case. The stress of the strange situation can cause even the sweetest pets to get snappy.
  • Don't be surprised if your pet does not recognize his fellow family members when they are in costume. Approach your pet slowly using your normal voice until they know it's you inside. Approach them first without a mask or face paint.
  • Keep your pet away from all of the Halloween goodies. Chocolate is toxic to many animals. Rich treats can cause upset tummies. Candy wrappers may be fun to play with but can be very dangerous if swallowed.
  • Watch out for candles- especially ones in pumpkins. Curious pets run the risk of getting burned or starting a fire.
  • Don't dress your pet in costumes unless you know he really loves it. It can put a lot of stress on your furry friend.
